When to visit Ukulhas
There is no single right month for Ukulhas. Neither season closes the island and neither guarantees a calm sea, so the better question is which weeks suit the holiday you have in mind: beach days, trips out to the reef and the animals, a celebration, or somewhere quiet to read.
Tell us the period you are weighing up and we will tell you what we know about it. What follows is how we would think it through.
The sea and the beach through the year
The Maldives has two main seasons, the south-west monsoon and the north-east season, and conditions still change from week to week inside each of them. The part that affects most stays is the shore: the visitors' beach faces south-west, so it feels that monsoon more than the rest of the island, and the sand moves along it through the year.
If swimming and shore snorkelling are high on your list, ask us what the beach and the reef have been like around your dates, then check with the team on the morning itself. A settled-looking week can still hand you a lively day, and the beach guide explains what that looks like from the sand.
Boat trips and wildlife
Mantas are worth planning around in any month: our crews see them throughout the year, and on most manta trips, though no sighting is ever promised. For the other animals we would rather tell you what the crews have been finding recently than publish a calendar we cannot stand behind.
Wind and swell decide which sites a captain can reach, and each trip is confirmed on the morning. The practical answer is to leave one spare day in the middle of your stay, so a trip that cannot run has somewhere to move to.
If quiet matters
Nala Veli Villa sits on a residential street away from the beachfront, which makes it the calmer of the two stays and the one to ask about first if a peaceful setting matters more than being closest to the sand.
Dates for a celebration
Symbolic weddings are arranged in advance, so send your dates as early as you can. Sandbank Dining and dinners on the beach depend on the weather and the sea; if an evening has to be called off, we look for another one during your stay first.
The festive period runs on its own terms
Stays from 15 December to 10 January follow their own cancellation and payment rules, which are set out on the Policies page. The stay packages cannot be booked across those nights at all, so if your dates fall in that window, plan on booking the rooms and the experiences separately.
